Laparoscopic Inguinal Hernia Repair

Hernia is a disorder in which a part of the body protrudes abnormally through a tear or opening in an adjacent part of the muscle or tissue wall that holds it, especially of the abdomen or groin. Surgery is the most common treatment for a hernia. Hernia surgery allows your surgeon to push the organ and herniated tissue back into place and reinforce the barrier holding it there using stitches or surgical mesh (a medical device used to provide support to damaged or weakened tissue during surgery).

A laparoscopic hernia repair surgery also called keyhole surgery, is a type of hernia surgery that allows surgeons to operate through several small incisions instead of one large open cut. During a laparoscopic hernia repair surgery, your surgeon uses several tiny cuts (usually three or four) to operate. Your surgeon inserts a thin tube with a tiny video camera (laparoscope) that projects images of your insides onto a screen. They insert surgical instruments into the other incisions that allow them to repair the hernia. This type of surgery is similar to other laparoscopic procedures. General anesthesia is given, and a small cut (incision) is made in or just below the navel. The belly is inflated with air so that the surgeon can see the organs in the belly, and it usually takes about an hour to complete the procedure.

However, there are important things to be thoroughly considered by a colorectal surgeon about this inguinal hernia repair surgery. Whether this hernia is incarcerated or strangulated, inguinal hernias lead to more pain or other complicated symptoms, the patient also has other conditions that need to be addressed before hernia repair surgery, etc.

Post-surgery. Most people who have undergone a laparoscopic hernia repair surgery can go home the next day and recovery time is about 1 to 2 weeks. The patient can return to light activity after 1 to 2 weeks, and strenuous exercises should wait until after a month of recovery.

Benefits of a laparoscopic hernia surgery

Hernia surgery is considered a safe procedure that can repair your hernia and prevent it from recurring. Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair (LIHR) has many benefits, including:

  • Less pain: Studies have found LIHR typically results in less pain and discomfort than open surgery one.
  • Reduce scarring: The small incisions used in LIHR result in minimal scarring, laparoscopic hernia surgery causes less scarring and usually involves fewer pain medicines, and they have a quicker recovery than open surgery.
  • Lower risk of infection: The small incisions in LIHR reduce the risk of wound infection.
  • Faster recovery: Patients can usually return to work and normal activities more quickly after LIHR.
  • Easier repair of recurrent hernias: LIHR can make it easier to repair a hernia that has come back.
  • Treat multiple hernias: LIHR can be used to treat multiple hernias, even on opposite sides, during the same operation.
  • Cosmetic benefits: The small incisions make LIHR more appealing for cosmetic reasons.
  • Accuracy: LIHR allows for more precise placement and fixation of the mesh, which can reduce the chance of the hernia recurrence.

Laparoscopic hernia repair may not be suitable for those who:

  • Have anesthesia intolerance or allergy.
  • Have bleeding disorders such as hemophilia or immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP).
  • Are taking anticoagulants (also called blood thinners) that prevent blood clots.
  • Have had many abdominal surgeries. Scar tissues may make the surgery harder to go through via a laparoscope.
  • Have severe lung diseases such as emphysema. The carbon dioxide used to inflate the belly may interfere with their breathing.
  • Are pregnant.
  • Are with extreme obesity.

However, LIHR also has some potential disadvantages, including: A slightly higher risk of injury to surrounding tissues or structures, a slightly higher chance of the hernia coming back, seromas (collection of fluid), hematomas (collection of blood), etc.
